Choosing the Right Flooring for Your Home
It is important to do some research and make sure you chose the right flooring for your home. No flooring material is right for everyone and every room. Hardwood floors are attractive and can look more formal. Carpet is more comfortable and fits in with a relaxed home. Both tile and stone are durable and long lasting materials. In order to find the right floor for your home you need to ask yourself some questions.
You need to think about who lives in your house and what affect that will have on the floors. Children and pets can be hard on flooring so if you have either or both you may want to make sure you choose durable flooring.
Carpeting is great for making a house feel warm and cozy but with children it may not be the right flooring choice. Carpet requires a lot of maintenance to keep it in good shape and to keep it clean. Also, carpet can retain odors after time without regular cleanings.
Tile or laminate materials are more durable, easier to clean and resist stains so they might be a better choice for families with small children. If you can take care of it properly, though, carpet is a good choice as well.
Carpets come in many forms but one with a deep pile is best because they hold up better and are more stain resistant. Unlike hardwood floors, carpets are soft and warm. Hardwood is beautiful, though, and can be found in any number of colors and styles to go with any design theme you may have in your home. Some of the most popular are maple and oak which fit well with traditional designs and cedar which gives a rustic appearance. Hardwood is a strong, durable material.
Moisture, though, is the one thing that can easily damage hardwood floors although newer floors are a little more water resistant. Hardwood should not be exposed to liquid spills and moisture leaks. Exposing hardwood floors to moisture will lead to buckling and warping that is difficult and expensive to repair. Hardwood should be cleaned on a regular basis but without any harsh chemicals or cleaners and with only the minimum water required. Often, carpets require professional cleaning to get them clean and looking like new.
In kitchens and garages tile and stone floors work great because they are extremely water and stain resistant. They can also hold up to a lot of foot traffic.
